Before the crew arrives
Winterization goes wrong most often because something was inaccessible, not because the technician cut corners.
Five things worth sorting the day before:
- Clear access to the backflow assembly. It is usually near the foundation or in a utility box. Shrubs grown over it in summer are the most common obstruction.
- Locate valve boxes. Mulch, leaf fall, and turf growth bury them over a season. A technician who cannot find a valve box cannot verify that zone cleared.
- Know your controller location and have power on. The shutdown includes programming, not just plumbing.
- Flag anything added since last year. A new bed, a new drip run, a zone split - these are exactly what gets missed on an unfamiliar system.
- Unlock gates and secure pets. Obvious, and still the most frequent reason a crew leaves without finishing the back garden.

What the technician should do on site
So you can tell whether the job was complete, the three steps are:
- Purge the pipes of water with compressed air, so no moisture is left to freeze inside the lines and cause cracks and fractures. Every zone individually - including drip.
- Winterize the backflow preventer and store it correctly. It is the device that stops contaminated water flowing backward into the drinking supply.
- Turn the controller off so it is not wasting energy through winter, and not firing a zone during a January thaw and refilling lines that were just cleared.
The observable test of a thorough blowout is simple: every zone should be run, and each should produce a burst of mist that tails off to nothing. If two zones were run and the crew packed up, the rest are still charged.
The DIY shortcuts that cause damage
Homeowners attempting their own blowout usually hit one of four failures, and each causes the damage winterization exists to prevent.
- Too much pressure. A high-pressure compressor drives fittings apart and burns out sprinkler head seals. The system empties and is damaged in the same pass.
- Too little volume. A small pancake compressor produces pressure but not the air volume needed to actually push water out of a lateral. It sounds like it is working and clears very little.
- Running a zone dry too long. Air moving through a head with no water for cooling degrades the seal.
- Ignoring the backflow assembly. The pipes get cleared and the most expensive above-grade component is left full.
This is the reason blowout is the step that most consistently justifies a professional visit, rather than the one to economise on.
Frost versus freeze in the Chesapeake climate
Annapolis sits close to open water, which moderates air temperature slightly and consistently encourages homeowners to delay. The pipe in the ground does not track the marine forecast.
The distinction that matters: a frost warning describes surface conditions at temperatures that never reach buried pipe. A hard freeze - sustained air below freezing - is what reaches shallow laterals and the above-grade backflow assembly. In this region the gap between the first frost and the first hard freeze usually runs several weeks.
That gap is the booking window, and it is the same window for every property in the county. Contractor calendars compress accordingly, so a September call buys a choice of dates and a call after the first freeze warning does not.
After the shutdown
Two things remain on the calendar once the system is drained.
Annual backflow certification. Maryland jurisdictions require the assembly to be tested each year by a certified tester with results filed with the water authority. The obligation runs with the property, so it applies to homeowners who inherited a system with the house. A freeze-damaged assembly fails the test, which is how a skipped shutdown becomes a compliance problem as well as a repair bill.
Spring start-up. A diagnostic rather than a switch: gradual repressurisation to avoid water hammer, then each zone inspected for heads that will not pop up, nozzles clogged over winter, and arcs knocked out of alignment - followed by reprogramming the controller for the season.
