Every irrigation system install starts with a flow budget
Before zones, before heads, there is one number: how much water the property can actually deliver at once.
That is measured at the source in gallons per minute, along with static pressure in PSI. Everything downstream is constrained by it. A designer allocates that flow across zones the way a budget is allocated across line items - and, as with a budget, the mistake is overcommitting.
An overcommitted zone drops pressure at every head. Rotors that should throw thirty feet throw twenty. The result is a ring of green around each head and a dry gap between them, which homeowners usually misdiagnose as a broken head. It is a design error, and no amount of runtime fixes it.

Head-to-head coverage is the coverage standard
Sprinkler heads do not distribute water evenly across their radius. They put down far more water close in than at the edge of their throw.
The correction is head-to-head coverage: each head is placed so its spray reaches the base of the next head. Adjacent patterns overlap, and the overlap compensates for the thin outer edge of each one. Done correctly, the combined precipitation across the zone is close to uniform.
Spacing heads at, say, 75 percent of their throw instead of 100 percent saves a contractor heads and labor. It also guarantees a dry band midway between every pair. This is the most common defect in a budget install and it is visible in the first dry August.
When you review a zone map, check that head spacing is not wider than head radius. That single check catches most bad designs.
Matched precipitation, and why head types cannot mix
Different head types apply water at very different rates.
- Fixed spray heads - high precipitation rate, roughly 1.5 inches per hour, short throw. Good for narrow strips.
- Rotors - low precipitation rate, long throw. Good for open turf.
- Rotary nozzles - low rate in a spray-head body. Useful for retrofits and mid-sized turf.
- Drip - very low rate, measured in gallons per hour. Beds and trees only.
Because a zone runs on one clock, everything in it must apply water at about the same rate. Mixing sprays and rotors on one valve means the spray section gets roughly three times the water the rotor section does. One area is drowned so the other can survive.
Within a single head type, nozzles also have to be matched. A quarter-circle nozzle covers a quarter of the area a full-circle nozzle does, so it must emit a quarter of the flow to apply the same depth. Manufacturers publish matched-precipitation nozzle sets for exactly this reason, and Aqua-Bright builds its systems on Hunter Industries components where those sets are standard.
Hydrozoning: grouping by water need, not by geography
The instinct is to zone by area - front yard, back yard, side yard. The correct approach is to zone by water requirement.
A shaded north-facing strip and a full-sun south lawn have materially different needs even when they are twenty feet apart. Put them on one valve and you will either brown the sun section or rot the shade section. Split them and each gets its own runtime.
Practical hydrozone groupings on a typical Maryland property:
- Full-sun turf - the longest runtime on the controller
- Shaded or north-facing turf - the same heads, materially less time
- Slopes - separated so they can be run in cycle-and-soak without affecting flat areas
- Shrub and foundation beds - drip irrigation, on their own valve
- Trees - deep, infrequent drip, often the lowest-frequency zone on the system
The zone count that comes out of this is a design output, not a target to be negotiated down.
Controller scheduling is part of the install, not an afterthought
A well-designed system on a bad schedule performs like a badly designed one.
Clay soils absorb slowly, so a long single cycle produces runoff. The fix is cycle-and-soak: split the required runtime into shorter cycles with soak intervals between them. Total water applied is unchanged; the share that actually infiltrates goes up.
