What custom means here
Custom heat transfers are produced to your artwork rather than pulled from a stock catalogue. Insta describes them as custom-made, available in a variety of styles and colour options, and printed to match your own design.
The output is a finished transfer, ready to press. Insta's description of the application: dress the garment or other substrate on the platen and imprint the design with a heat press — a process that takes seconds. That is the entire production step remaining in your building.
Insta is a US-based manufacturer with a California sales team and has been in this business since 1959.
The efficiency argument, stated plainly
Insta's own comparison against vinyl and cad-cut: custom heat transfers do not require additional labour and equipment, and they expedite production by removing repetitive and time-consuming steps — cutting, pressing the transfer for adhesion, and weeding the design to eliminate excess films.
Three consequences that show up in a shop's numbers:
- Colour count is free. A twelve-colour design presses in the same cycle as a one-colour design.
- Setup collapses. No screens, no separations, no registration on multi-layer vinyl.
- Throughput is machine-bound, not labour-bound. Insta specifies swift recovery between applications, so the press does not gate you.
The trade is a per-unit transfer cost against a near-zero setup cost, which is why the format wins on short runs, reorders and anything photographic.
Choosing a family
Insta publishes a transfer comparison chart on the custom heat transfers hub, and each product type includes its recommended application settings. The short version:
| Application | Product |
|---|---|
| Photo-realistic, unlimited colour | Insta DTF |
| Team sports, performance and active wear | SuperFlex |
| Industrial and workwear | Tuftrans II |
| Eco-positioned, water-based | Aquatrans |
| General screen-printed | Fastrans |
| Raised, dimensional | High Density HPF |
| Hi-vis and safety | InstaGlo Reflective |
| General-purpose alternative | Ultima |
Insta organises the hub by market as well: team sports apparel and uniforms, performance and active wear, health care, brands and eco-friendly, industrial and workwear, and casual wear. A heat transfer sample pack is available if you want to feel the options on your own blanks first.
What to send, and what comes back
Send the logo or graphic. Check it first against the published minimum line weights for the family you want — Insta DTF asks for 1 pt positive and 2 pt negative on white and 2 pt in both directions on colour; InstaGlo asks for 2.5 pt in both directions. Vector formats are preferred for clean output.
What comes back is finished transfers plus the application settings for that product. Insta DTF, for example:
| Setting | Insta DTF published value |
|---|---|
| Dwell time | 12–15 seconds |
| Temperature | 285–295 °F / 141–146 °C |
| Pressure | 50–70 psi |
| Peel | Peel hot |
| Minimum line weight (white) | 1 pt positive, 2 pt negative |
| Minimum line weight (colour) | 2 pt positive, 2 pt negative |
| Shelf life | One year from date of shipment |
Excess transfers can be stored and applied on an as-needed basis, subject to the published storage rules:
- Keep transfers in their original packaging until you press them.
- Store away from direct heat, sunlight and high humidity.
- Shelf life is one year from the date of shipment.
Pricing
Insta does not publish per-unit transfer pricing. Custom heat transfers are quoted against your artwork, imprint size and run length. There is no meaningful list price for a product produced to your artwork at your quantity in your imprint size.
Routes to a number: the heat transfer quote form, the Insta DTF ordering form for that product specifically, 562.404.3000, or sales@instagraph.com. Insta's stated position is that its California-based sales team partners on branding requirements — a product consultation is the intended first step, not a price list.
Insta also frames transfers and machines as one system: highly durable transfers provide best-in-class results when used in conjunction with its heat press machinery.
